Introduction to Photoshop 3
Adjustment Layer:
- A group of a super useful, non-destructive image editing tools that add colour and tonal adjustments to your image without permanently changing its pixels. Able to edit and discard adjustments/restore original image anytime.
- Adding an adjustment layer to an image will create a new layer appearing over the image along with a Properties panel (specific to the type of adjustment selected) that allows your to modify the adjustment layer.
Figure 1.1 Adjustment Layer and Properties Panel
1. Brightness / Contrast
- Makes adjustments to the tonal range of an image
- Brightness: To adjust the highlights
- Contrast: To adjust the shadows
2. Level
- Modify the tonal values in an image by adjusting the levels of the shadows, mid tones, and highlights.
3. Curves
- Adjust as many points as you want throughout the entire tonal range of your image.
4. Exposure
- Adjust exposure level with 3 sliders: Exposure, Offset and Gamma.
- Exposure only adjusts the highlights of the image.
- Offset adjusts the mid tones.
- Gamma adjusts the dark tones.
5. Selective Colour
- Selectively modifies the amount of a primary colour without modifying the other primary colours in an image.
- To change colours, add blur or create completely new image effects.

Tutorial:
For practical class, Mr Fauzi assigned us on a digital collage by using a set of elements provided. We were to create 3 compositions as well and choose the best on out of 3 of them.
Practical:
I started on finding my inspirations from Pinterest after Mr Fauzi briefed us on this task. Then, I began on creating different compositions, below are the 3 compositions I have created:
Figure 2.2 Composition #1 (18/10/2024)
Figure 2.3 Composition #2 (18/10/2024)
Figure 2.4 Composition #3 (18/10/2024)
Figure 2.5 Final Composition (21/10/2024)
Description:
While attempting this composition, I learnt to use the pen and magic tool to cut out the elements’ background. I also experimented on the sizes of the elements, adjusting some of them bigger and smaller. The concept of this collage is dreamcore, the individuals walking on the railway station and a building cut in half with a fish appearing in between the gap represents exploring the wonders and unknowns of the world. Secondly, I used the man stepping out of the lift as Doraemon’s Anywhere Door. The door brings individuals to anywhere they want to go, so in this composition, three of the individuals are brought to a place to explore the unknowns of the world.

After uploading into Google Classroom, Mr Fauzi picked the best one out of 3 compositions and we were to edit them using adjustment layer such as the levels, curves, hues and saturation to edit the collage as a practical activity.
Figure 2.7 Process (21/10/2024)
Figure 2.8 Edited Collage (23/10/2024)
Description:
In this collage, I learnt to use levels, curves, hues and saturation in the adjustment layers to edit some of the elements. I used the levels and curves to edit the brightness and contrast of the whole collage, then changed the hues and saturation of the fish and the textured background which creates bright and vibrant colours. The storyline of this edited collage is the same except this time they are exploring the galaxy which explains the purple textured background.
Reflection:
This week's lecture was important for me as I’m still not familiar with Adobe Photoshop. It gave me insight into the tools in Adobe Photoshop, and I’m still slowly learning about them. Hopefully, I’ll be able to master them by the end of this semester.
This project was something new to me because I rarely apply filters to a digital collage. I learned a lot, including how to use different tools to manipulate an image's colours and shapes. I also created 3 digital collages based on my visualizations and the stories I wanted to convey, I spent quite some time exploring each collage. Overall, I acquired new skills and had fun assembling the images.
