Week 6 (28/10/2024)

Lectures:

The 7 Principles of Poster Design:

1. Emphasis: An element you want to focus and emphasize on in a design.

2. Balance and Alignment: The way the elements are arranged to harmonise with other elements in a design which will give an appearance of properly distributed elements.

3. Contrast: Creates space and difference between elements in your design. The background needs to be significantly different from the color of the elements to work harmoniously together.

4. Repetition: Repeating elements in a design.

5. Proportion: The visual size and weight of elements in a composition and how they relate to each other.

6. Movement: Controlling the elements in a composition so that the eye is led to move from one to the next and the information is properly communicated to your audience. Movement creates the story or the narrative of your work.

7. White Space: The empty page around the elements in your composition.

Tutorial:

Black & White Recolouring

  • We were given a set of images to attempt on recolouring the images.
  • Exercise 1: Using the colour palette and apply adjustment layer to recolour
  • Exercise 2: Using eyedropper tool to extract colours from another set of images and apply adjustment layers to recolour.

Reflection:

This week's lecture was about design principles in poster design. Personally, I think it is important to apply design principles in poster design or any artwork and this lecture served as an introduction to help us with Project 2B.

Besides that, working on this practical class activity was quite challenging for me because we attempted two different methods for recolouring black and white images. The first method was less challenging compared to the second method due to the different tools used. Nonetheless, this was a great learning experience for me, as I also used adjustment layers to edit the filters after recolouring the images and I am satisfied with the outcomes. I would definitely use recolouring in future works as it is easy and convenient too.
