LECTURES

Week 4 (16/10/2024)

Figure 1.1 Colours & Gradients

There were no classes for section because Mr Hafiz was not well on that day but he did an online class the next day and introduced us to Adobe Colour where we can search for colour themes and explore the other features. Then, Mr Hafiz demonstrated on how to create colour and gradients using the colours themes in Adobe Illustrator.

Week 5 (23/10/2024)

There were no classes this week as it was to replace the mural competition. Mr Hafiz also asked us show him our sketches, mood board and rationale for Task 2 and get feedbacks from him so we can further proceed with the finalisation of Task 2.

Week 6 (30/10/2024)

It was a public holiday so we did not have classes for this week. We were to focus on our Task 2 composition because this week is the deadline for this task.

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 2: Composition

In this task, we were to create a background with a suitable composition based on the story of our character to further narrate our character in depth.

1. Character

Figure 2.1 Process (31/101/2024)

Firstly, I improvised the visual of my vormator character (Nova) as I thought it did not look fierce and scary enough. I only did subtle changes such as the eyes and adding a weapon for my character. This is the improvised version of my vormator character (Nova).

2. Pokemon Card

Figure 2.3 Pokemon Card Design Process (31/10/2024)

After that, I started to make the Pokemon card template, I referred to the card design of an electric type Pokemon for the colour schemes, surprisingly they use yellow for electric type Pokemons so I decided to use the same colour. I added gradients to my card design to make it look like its glowing and wrote a short description for my character's abilities.

3. Mood Board, Sketches & Rationale

Figure 2.4 Mood Board, Sketches & Rationale (1/11/2024)

This is a compilation of all my mood board, sketches and rationale for my composition. I also referred to 'Framed Ink' book after receiving feedbacks as I was not that clear about compositions. I have used few of them based on my understanding and they helped me a lot in creating a composition.

4. Process

Figure 2.5 Composition Process (1/11/2024)

I have captured my process (most of it). I used tools such as gradients, glow, blur and etc to further enhance the elements. I also explore placement to put the 'Oni mask' to decide on a suitable placement for the composition.

Figure 2.6 Close Up Details (1/11/2024)

This is 1 of the close up details. In the image, I increased the Gaussian blur radius for further elements to make them look far away. Example: The flames have subtle blur but the further skulls near the mountains and mountains looks way blurry compared to the flames.

5. Final Composition

Figure 2.8 Final Composition (1/11/2024)

Figure 2.9 Pokemon Card (1/11/2024)

After some feedbacks and changes, I have completed my composition and Pokemon card along with a brief description of my character's (Nova) abilities. I decided to go with the original Pokemon card design because it is old but gold.

FEEDBACK

Week 5

After I showed Mr Hafiz my sketch and mood board. Because it was coloured, he asked me to just sketch out with outline first as in B&W. I should also refer to the 'Framed Ink' book to further demonstrate the understanding of the composition and shot setup that will work for the narrative of my environment.

Week 6

I did some changes according to Mr Hafiz's feedbacks last week and sent him a finalisation of my composition to get some feedbacks before submission. He mentioned that overall compositon and perspective is clear and okay but I can tighten it up as there were empty spaces.

REFLECTION

Working on this task was more difficult compared to Task 1 because creating a background isn’t really my strength. However, I learned a lot through feedback and by reading the 'Framed Ink' book which provided insights into composition and other related topics.

Additionally, I’m not very skilled when it comes to working with colours, as I prefer black and white more. Thus, I used Adobe Colour, which was introduced during the online class, and it was very helpful for colouring this task. However, I still feel that my background colors look a bit odd and wonky despite using the colour themes I found. I think I need more practice in this area.

Despite the challenges, I really enjoyed this task. Designing a Pokémon card for my character brought back childhood memories, and creating a background and composition added depth and a backstory to my character.
