Task 1 / Exercises (Vormator)
LECTURES
There were no tutorial and practical classes on week 1 so I read and looked through the learning materials uploaded by Mr Hafiz. We were to also fill in our details in a contact sheet and request access for Adobe apps for our first task.
Week 2 (2/10/2024):
Figure 1.2 Bezier Game Score (2/10/2024)
Figure 1.3 Vormator Shapes Tracing (2/10/2024)
Since some of us still did not have access for Adobe apps, Mr Hafiz let us play the Bezier Game to learn and get used to the pen tool. Besides that, Mr Hafiz also guided and taught us on how to trace the vormator shapes in Adobe Illustrator.
Week 3 (9/10/2024):
Figure 1.4 Shape Builder and Pathfinder (9/10/2024)
For week 3, we used shape builder and pathfinder to make an 'Adidas' logo as an exercise in Adobe Illustrator. After that, I asked Mr Hafiz for feedbacks about my sketch for the vormator design.
Moreover, Mr. Hafiz also talked about the shape language of a
character design.
-
Circle: Evokes a warm and welcoming feeling.
-
Square: Feel strong, can feel difficult to move.
-
Triangle: Sharp, mysterious, menacing.

Task 1: Exercises (Vormator)
1. Inspirations
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Figure 2.1 Jolyne Cujoh and Stone Free (Stand)
I got my inspiration for my vormator design from 'Jojo's Bizarre Adventure'. I planned to design a character inspired by the characters' stand which is an entity psychically generated by its owner, a stand user. Stands can come in different shapes and sizes, also can be wielded for good or evil. It presents itself as a figure hovering or near the user and possesses abilities such as elemental attacks, enhancement or manipulation of the body, time or space. Above is an example of a stand user and her stand. Thus, I intended to design a character that can also act as a character's stand.
Figure 2.2 Adventure Time Characters
Next, I got my inspirations from 'Hunson Abadeer' and 'Flame Princess' from 'Adventure Time'. I wanted to enlarge my character's head a little bigger like Hunson's head, and apply 'the tentacle' on my character to replicate Flame Princess's flames.
Most of my colours, characteristics and features are inspired by 3 of these characters. I used shades of purples, yellow and gold as they are complementing and contrasting colours. The colours also represent the characteristics of my character design. These characters also have similar head shapes, triangles because they have sharper edges, I applied the elements in my vormator design.
2. Sketches and Design Explorations
Figure 2.4 Sketches and Ideas (2/10/2024)
These are my rough sketches for my vormator design. Initially, I was planning to go for a more robotic design but my ideas seem a little boring so I decided to try to improvise and modify the robotic features into something like a samurai, heroic or villainous look.
Figure 2.5 Process and Design Explorations (9/10/2024)
After sketching, I tried digitalising my sketches in Adobe Illustrator and played around with the vormator shapes and colours. The process was a little tricky as the digitalisation did not look alike with my sketches.
Figure 2.6 Final Design Process (10/10/2024)
Figure 2.7 Colour Palette (10/10/2024)
Lastly, I finalised my character design and started working on a silhouette and coloured version. In this process, I have experimented on different shapes and colours to create suitable characteristics and features for my character.
3. Final Design
Figure 2.8 Silhouette (10/10/2024)
This is Nova. Their design is mostly based of Kairagi: Dancing Thunder, a samurai from Genshin Impact. Nova was a samurai but they meddled into witch craft and is wielded with evil intentions. Nova's main abilities is electro (electric) but they also possess fire as an alternative element. Both electro and fire creates a powerful and deadly elemental reaction to enemies.
Week 3
Mr Hafiz said that my initial vormator design looks fine, character design leans more towards square shapes. Final vormator design has sharper edges which leans more to triangle shapes.
Working on this task was interesting. Learning how to use Adobe Illustrator wasn’t too difficult, as I had used it for projects during my Foundation in Design. However, there were times when I got confused with some of the tools since I’m still not entirely familiar with them. To overcome this, I often turned to YouTube tutorials or referred to the learning materials uploaded on Google Classroom.
Additionally, creating a character design from scratch was challenging for me. It took quite some time to decide on a character concept and find ideas on Pinterest for inspiration. The task was even more challenging due to the limited shapes given for this task, but sketching out my ideas helped a lot throughout the process. Despite the difficulty, I thoroughly enjoyed this task, as it pushed me to challenge myself in creating a new character while learning more about the tools in Adobe Illustrator.
