Digital Surrealism
Realism vs Surrealism
- Realism: Non-exotic and non-extraordinary subject matter and theme.
- Surrealism: A cultural movement focused on type of arts to express the artist’s idea. Explores subconscious mind, subject matters concentrating on dream like images and aims to distort the ordinary and reality.
Figure 1.1 Realism vs Surrealism
Dadaism :
- An anti war art movement with art works that is satirical and nonsensical in nature.
- Dada artists like Salvador Dalí, a Spanish surrealist painter and printmaker, promoted free association and dream imagery.
Figure 1.2 Dadaism Artworks
- Dream-like scenes and symbolic images.
- Capturing your dream by sketching it out and find references.

Mr Fauzi provided us a video tutorial of 'How to create loop animation for I.G Stories'.
Practical:
For this week's practical, Mr Fauzi did a progress check with us on our poster design. Below are my progress for week 7 and 9:
Quote of the day: Little by little good things take time.
Summary of your design concept: My visualisation and ideas for the poster design is inspired by a combination of the slice-of-life and surrealism aesthetics. It will feature photography cutouts of everyday life I captured during my outings and travels, combined with Lego like typography manipulation. The Lego-like texts of “Little by little good things take time” will be stacked upwards, like stairs towards a photography of a door that represent “goals” and symbolizing the idea of making progress “little by little good things take time”. The photos will be edited into cutouts like my poster reference 1 and 3 and one of the photo of me walking will be placed near the Lego typography stairs to represent walking up the stairs little by little to reach my goals.
Figure 2.4 Explorations (27/11/2024)
Above are my exploration sketches, I did both hand drawn and digital sketches for my poster design. After that, I attempted on a test try for my typography design in Adobe Illustrator. I also used my own photography I took for this poster design. I chose the photography I took during my outings and travels where I capture people's everyday life and street photography, I decided to combine these photos and make a collage then add in the typography design.
Figure 2.4 Process (27/11/2024)
- 1) I used Quick Selection Tool to select part of the clouds to apply on a different background and also erase unwanted backgrounds of the photos using the Select and Mask option the refine the edges. Then, I used Polygonal Lasso Tool to roughly cut out the photos according to the shapes then use Layer Mask and applied a crumpled paper texture image to place it behind to create a paper tear outline for my photos.

- 2) I insert the seaside photo and then the skies, I applied Halftone Effect on the skies. After I placed everything, I used the Eraser Tool to lightly erase the clouds and door cutout to create a floating and natural result.

- 3) I used Adjustment Tool/Layers to touch up and edit my photos. (Hue/Saturation, Brightness/Contrast, Levels and Linear Light.)
Figure 2.7 Final Poster Design (27/11/2024)
This poster design showcases slice-of-life and surrealism aesthetics in a vibrant and collage-style. "Little by little good things take time" emphasizes positivity and growth to achieve dreams and goals. The use of LEGO style for the text symbolizes gradual progress, while the bright colors red, yellow, blue, and green contrast with the earthy tones of the sand and the soft blue sky, which is textured with a retro halftone effect. The blue door surrounded by plants in the center anchors the composition. This poster not only inspires but also aims to convey curiosity and beauty about combining the ordinary with the extraordinary.

Reflection:
This week’s lecture was particularly interesting because Mr. Fauzi delved into the comparison between surrealism and realism. As someone who enjoys discovering and exploring different art styles, I found this lecture captivating. It sparked my curiosity about the unique characteristics of both movements and how they express reality in such distinct ways. The contrast between surrealism and realism has further inspired me to dive deeper into these styles.
Project 2B was an interesting experience, as I designed a poster with the theme "Quote of the Day", a combined assignment with the Illustration and Visual Narrative module. I found it challenging to develop suitable aesthetics and concept, as I needed to merge typography and photography elements into a balanced composition. Although there were ups and downs throughout the project, I am satisfied with my final outcome and overall experience.
