Figure 1.1 Activities done in class
- Intertwine: text elements to create depth and interest.
- Clipping Mask: for texture or image fill within the text.
- 3D Effects: Apply depth, materials, and lighting for a dimensional look.
- Warping: Experiment with distortions, meshes, and top-shape warping to alter text shapes.
Week 8 (13/11/2024)
INDEPENDENT LEARNING WEEK
Week 9 (20/11/2024)
On this week, Mr Hafiz gave some tips and feedbacks for our poster design ideas during class.
Week 10 (27/11/2024)
We had no physical classes this week and Mr Hafiz said to focus on our poster design, a combined project with Digital Photography and Imaging, he also mentioned that he will brief us on the final project on Week 11.
Task 3: Illustrated Typography Poster
Figure 2.1 Moodboard, Inspirations & Artstyles (27/11/2024)
For my ideas, I did some research about the visualisation for quote I have chosen which is 'Little by little good things take time'. I decided to apply my childhood favourite, Lego, for my typography design. Then, I did some research on graphic designers that incorporate Lego in type design, one of them is brik font by Craig Ward.
Figure 2.2 Sketches, Explorations and Photos (27/11/2024)
Above are my exploration sketches, I did both hand drawn and digital sketches for my poster design. After that, I attempted on a test try for my typography design in Adobe Illustrator. I also used my own photography I took for this poster design. I chose the photography I took during my outings and travels where I capture people's everyday life and street photography, I decided to combine these photos and make a collage then add in the typography design.
Rationale
Backstory
This poster design is a combination of
slice-of-life and surrealism aesthetics, inspired by my personal
interests and curiosity about combining the ordinary with the
extraordinary. The concept serves as a reflection of progress as a
journey of small, meaningful steps toward goals to opening a door to
undiscovered wonders. It represents how everyday life can be beautiful
in a simple way and discovering unexpected possibilities.
Typography Design (IVN)
The quote, "Little by little good things take time," is manipulated into LEGO stairs, with vibrant colors carefully selected from my research into basic LEGO colour palettes to express a sense of playful creativity. The stacked LEGO bricks stairs ascend towards the floating door to convey the idea of gradual growth and progress. The LEGO-style text symbolizes gradual progress, complemented by the earthy tones, vibrant colors, and human cutouts that further enhance the overall composition of the poster design.
Photography Elements (DPI)
The background
features a photograph of sand at the seaside combined with a blue sky
and clouds, edited and adjusted with halftone and linear light to
create a dreamlike, floating effect for the door that symbolizes our
goals. The cutouts of people I captured in everyday life, outlined
with paper-tear effects, are placed on the sand to depict simple yet
relatable scenes like walking and chit-chatting. A cutout of myself
walking toward the LEGO staircase symbolizes my own path toward
achieving goals by going up the stairs little by little.
2) Process
Figure 2.3 Process (27/11/2024)
1) I typed out my quote on separate artboards and apply colours on them.
2) I used the Extrude & Bevel Tool and applied them on every text by setting the suitable perspective for my poster design.
Figure 2.4 Process (27/11/2024)
3) I used Eclipse Tool and Rectangle Tool to create LEGO studs by combining them into cylinders
4) Next, I used Shape Builder Tool to create the LEGO stud shape.
5) Lastly, I copy pasted and placed the LEGO stud on the text then repeat the same process on every letters.
Figure 2.5 Finalise Typography Design (27/11/2024)
I exported them as PNG and these are the finalised letter designs. Honestly, it was very fun and interesting to make them, it reminds me of my childhood playing with Lego bricks.
Figure 2.6 Final Poster Design (27/11/2024)
This poster design showcases slice-of-life and surrealism aesthetics in a vibrant and collage-style. "Little by little good things take time" emphasizes positivity and growth to achieve dreams and goals. The use of LEGO style for the text symbolizes gradual progress, while the bright colors red, yellow, blue, and green contrast with the earthy tones of the sand and the soft blue sky, which is textured with a retro halftone effect. The blue door surrounded by plants in the center anchors the composition, while the photographic cutouts of people engaged in everyday activities add a humanistic touch. This poster not only inspires but also aims to convey curiosity and beauty about combining the ordinary with the extraordinary.
Figure 2.7 Compilation (28/11/2024)
This is a compilation of all my mood board, sketches and rationale for my poster design which includes all the details from both this module and Digital Photography and Imaging.
Week 9
I showed Mr Hafiz my ideas sketches and briefly explained my rationale for my poster design. He said he likes the stacked up Lego staircase more than the other ideas. He also gave feedbacks for additional ideas to the Lego design.
Week 10
I showed Mr Hafiz my finalised poster design and asked if there is anything I can improve on, he gave some feedbacks saying the overall composition could be tighter because the elements are still a little loose around, the visuals could be enlarged and brought closer to each other.
Moreover, I enjoyed designing the typography manipulation which is making the Lego styled design for my quote. It was fun and interesting while discovering new tools and it felt like I was digitally assembling the Lego bricks which was unique and enjoyable personally.
