REFLECTION

Experiences

Typography was one of the modules I took in the first semester of BDCM. Initially, I wasn’t used to paying close attention to the details of typography, but after completing this 14 week module, I gained a deeper understanding and appreciation for it. I enjoyed every task given as I've gotten a wider exposure to typography such as type expression, text formatting, typeface design, and more. These tasks were beneficial as I was able to improve the quality of my work progressively. Additionally, the feedback and guidance I received from Mr. Vinod were valuable. He provided clear instructions and helped me focus on important details, such as kerning, letterspacing, and side bearings. Overall, I am grateful for the opportunity to learn typography in my first semester and will continue to apply the knowledge and skills I have acquired in the future.

Observations

From these 14 weeks, I had observe and appreciate the different designs my peers created. It was interesting to see their unique perspectives and creative concepts to the tasks. Personally, I think that each design reflected their personality and thought processes which made my learning experience valuable. Moreover, my friends and I find inspiration in each other's work during the feedback sharing sessions as we showcased our designs and had discussions about them. Furthermore, I paid more attention to the details in typography, such as how kerning and letterspacing can significantly impact the readability and reading rhythm of reading materials. I gained a better understanding on how these tiny details can enhance the overall quality of a design.

Findings

Throughout these 14 weeks, I have become more familiar with Adobe applications by consistently working on all the tasks, which was one of my goals to achieve in the first semester of degree. Additionally, I have come to realise that further readings are crucial in typography. I remember Mr. Vinod mentioning that the history of typography dates back over 500 years and it is impossible to cover everything in just 14 weeks. Reading books and articles has provided me with additional knowledge and a deeper understanding of typography. Lastly, having a design process for every task is essential as documentation is required to track our exploration and the evolution of a design.
