"Soft Light, Heavy Heart" captures the contrast between warmth and solitude. The glowing café lights create a serene atmosphere yet the faceless lonely figure beneath the lamp post represents isolation. The empty chair symbolises absence, perhaps of a loved one, an unspoken conversation or an opportunity left behind. The use of rough brushstrokes and textured materials reflects inner turmoil while the dreamlike glow and grain enhances the melancholic yet peaceful mood. This artwork expresses the bittersweet nature of solitude where silence allows thoughts to overflow and fill empty spaces of the mind.
- What have I learnt in this module?

- What did I not enjoy the most?
- What have I learnt about myself through this module?
- What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?
- What are my aspirations?
Throughout this module, I have gained valuable knowledge about design principles including both elements and principles. I have learned about their importance and usefulness in creating meaningful and creative works. Additionally, I have learned and developed the ability to conduct an in depth visual analysis that allows me to observe and analyse artworks or designs.
I enjoyed exploring different artworks that incorporate various design elements and principles as I have gotten a broad exposure while completing all tasks. I also found it fun to observe and analyse artworks by interpreting and uncovering secret hidden messages within them. Besides, I like the brainstorming phase and coming up with idea sketches because it gave me a great opportunity to create an artwork of my own without limitations. Personally, I feel that having limitations restricts my ability to think creatively. I can explore ideas more freely and push my creative boundaries without feeling like I'm confined in a small space.
However, there were also aspects of the module that I did not enjoy as much. The process of creating the artwork was quite stressful and challenging for me, I was constantly worried that the final outcome would not meet my expectations. The trial and error process was also frustrating at times because the result were not my desired outcome but I eventually tried my best to make it work. D: I also prefer physical classes over online sessions as I believe in person interactions would have allowed us to share more opinions and new design ideas with our lecturer and classmates. Despite my best efforts, I still struggle with procrastination and a lack of motivation which was challenging to have a good time management.
Furthermore, I have also learned more about myself. I realised that I enjoy analysing different creative works and concepts which is very interesting because there is always a meaning behind every one of them. Compared to my previous works, I have conducted more research for this module, it helped improve my understanding of design principles. I also stepped out of my comfort zone by experimenting with mixed media and different materials. However, sometimes I tend to be too ambitious which makes it difficult for me to narrow my ideas to one clear direction.
My learning journey has changed in several ways. Before this module, I had not conducted visual analysis in depth because my foundation year observations were mostly surface level. Now, I take more time to study and analyse artworks, paying closer attention to the design principles used and interpretations. Nevertheless, some remain the same. I could understand the tasks assigned in this module since I had already learned about design principles during my foundation in design. Unfortunately, my struggle with procrastination and motivation still continues and I really need to improve my time management skills.
I aspire to improve myself and become a much better version of who I am today because I still definitely have a lot to learn. I am grateful and appreciate all the helpful and insightful feedback I received from my lecturer, Dr. Charles, as well as from my friends and I will remember them for my future projects. I hope to utilise the knowledge gained from this module to create more interesting works that can contribute to building my portfolio. Realistically speaking, my goal is to become a designer working with well known companies and most importantly, becoming someone who is not struggling with deadlines and art block but instead creating meaningful and inspirational designs that are beneficial to the world ~
