PROJECT 1 / Audio Editing Exercises
1. Audio - Sound for Visual
- Choose or record sound clips to be used to create sound effects to bring a video clip to live. The clips will be provided. Students are required to identify the visual components from the video clip that needs sound. Duration: 2 minutes.
Below is the timestamp dialogue guide for the movie, Everything, Everywhere, All at Once audio dubbing:
Figure 1.1 EEAAO Dialogue Timeframe (5/5/2025)
We were divided into a group of 5:
- Daphne
- Emily
- Shuen
- Vincent
- Ryoma

I started by recording my own voice for the audio dubbing:
Figure 1.3 Adjusting Volume for Dialogue Dubbing (25/5/2025)
After trimming the audio dubbing clips, I inserted them into Adobe Premiere Pro and adjust the volumes for them. Volume: Dialogue: between -6dB & -12dB.

Next, I did some adjustments to the sound effects as some of them have inconsistent volumes, some were too loud and some were too soft. Volume: Ambience: below -20dB, Hard sound effects: Depends.

I also did some adjustments to the background music to make sure my audio dubbing does not get buried by the background music (ambience sound). Volume: Ambience: below -20dB, Hard sound effects: Depends.

I applied Pitch Shifter to all 3 characters for audio dubbing. Waymond's voice is lower compared to Evelyn's and the old lady's.

2. Audio - Sound Shaping
- Students will be given a choice of scenarios and they have to pick one and create the soundscape for the chosen scenario.
-
Record your own voice for 10 seconds for Project 1 Exercise 2 sound shaping.
- Voice of phone call.
- Voice coming from inside of the closet.
- Underground cave.
- Alien/ Orc voice.
To start editing: Effect rack → Filter & EQ → Parametric Equalizer

Inside Closet (Muffled) Voice Adjustment: BASS remain, TREBLE to the bottom, raise MID RANGE to top.

Underground Cave Voice Adjustment: Apply REVERB. Increase Decay Time.

This is the adjustment I did for the alien voice effect, I increased the Semi-tones to 5 and the Cents to 40 to create a high pitch and slightly distorted voice.

In Task 1, I was introduced to audio dubbing which was something I had little experience with before. I did not realise how much sound design goes into making a scene feel real, layering voice recordings with the right sound effects made a big difference. I really enjoyed the process of recording audio and searching for effects that matched the video. It reminded me of those behind the scenes videos about how movie sounds are made which I have always found interesting.
Although I struggled a bit with Adobe Premiere Pro since I'm still learning, I found the project enjoyable overall. Sound shaping was interesting and eye opening as I have gained skills on how to adjust audios in different voices in Adobe Audition, it was fun exploring and playing around different tools taught during class.
Overall, this task helped me understand the importance of sound design in video editing and storytelling, I will apply the skills from what I have learned to create better outcomes in my future projects.
