      REFLECTION

      Experiences

It’s crazy to think it’s already Week 14 in the blink of an eye. Advanced Typography has definitely been one of the more challenging modules this semester. It made me think more carefully when designing and taught me to pay attention to the typography.

Just like in Typography during Semester 1, this module helped me explore and understand type more deeply. I honestly enjoyed each task and learned so much throughout these 14 weeks. There were definitely ups and downs along the way, but that’s all part of the learning process to help me improve on my designs. Mr. Vinod’s guidance and feedback were really helpful. His comments were always clear and pushed me to improve and think more critically about my work. They weren’t just corrections but they really helped me grow.

Overall, this module did not just help me improve as a designer, but also changed the way I see and appreciate typography around me. It was challenging at times, but I’m proud of my progress and how much I have learned and look forward to growing even more.

      Observations

Throughout this module, I observed how typography plays a much bigger role because I mainly focused on making things look nice, but as the weeks went by, I started to observe how much thought and precision goes into every typographic decision. From the thickness and contrast of strokes, the spacing between letters (kerning and side bearings), to creating a good layout. Every small detail impacts the overall design and how the audience reads and understands the message.

Another observation was how typography became something I notice in everyday life. Whether I was walking past a shop, scrolling on my phone or reading packaging labels. I found myself analysing the type used, its style, and how effective or ineffective it was,  constantly thinking if there's better readability and legibility? Does the font match the content's theme and etc. This kind of thinking slowly became part of my process through practice and feedback throughout these 14 weeks.

Besides that, I also observed how my peers approached and designed their typography works. It was both interesting and eye opening to see how each person interpreted the same brief in completely different ways. Everyone had their own unique design style, thought process and creative direction, which made me realise how vast and diverse typography can be.

      Findings

In all the weekly tasks, critiques and exercises, I discovered that typography is not just about design. It’s about visual communication. A design can look great, but if the type isn’t readable or clear, the visual communication is lost. Finding the balance between function and form is what makes typography effective. I also learned how important feedback is in the design process. Mr. Vinod’s comments helped me see my work more critically and pushed me to improve with each task. His guidance helped me make more thoughtful design choices.

Another key finding was how different typefaces carry different moods and personalities. Choosing the right one for the right context is important. I also realised how much detail and precision goes into type design.

Lastly, I found that further readings were really helpful. Since 14 weeks isn’t enough to learn everything, reading articles and books helped me gain more knowledge and inspiration from how other designers think and work.
